Resurfacing of A1 between Newton on the Moor and West Cawledge – 16 August to 20 September

The following information has been provided by Highways England:

Highways England are resurfacing about 3 miles of the northbound carriageway of the A1 in Northumberland between Newton‐on‐the‐Moor (approximately 5 miles south of Alnwick) and West Cawledge (approximately 2 miles south of Alnwick).

We are using an innovative and more environmentally friendly method called cold repaving. This re-uses material dug out of the existing surface, mixes it with graphene and other materials giving a new road surface which makes journeys smoother and safer.

As we set up and remove the traffic management some junctions will be closed for one night. Local diversions will be in place.

Once we start work, the northbound carriageway will be completely closed with traffic running in contraflow, one lane in each direction, on the southbound carriageway.

The layout of the road and the need to close some crossovers mean that the following restrictions and diversions will be in place:

Newton on the Moor – both accesses from the A1 will be closed. Traffic will be diverted

Shilbottle area – access to the A1 southbound is maintained.

Whittingham area access from A1 closed. Traffic will be diverted

We are currently sending letters to communities that may be affected by the work.

There are a number of residential and business properties which have direct access on to the A1. Each of these will be visited personally with details of the restrictions and actions needed to maintain access to their properties. Where needed, our staff will accompany them in and out.

We always try to stick to our published closures but sometimes weather and other factors mean that dates can change.
