North Sunderland Parish Council

Serving North Sunderland and Seahouses

North Sunderland is a village on the coast of Northumberland and adjacent to Seahouses. The population was 1,959 at the 2011 census.

The name North Sunderland may be of Old English origin. The first element is Suder meaning “south, southern”, while the second is land meaning “land”. The name means “southern – land”.

Historically the in-land village of North Sunderland grew significantly when the nearby coast was developed as a harbour. Houses were built, particularly in connection with the herring fishery. Community growth became concentrated around these sea- houses, eventually being recognised under the name Seahouses. In practice, there is no recognisable boundary between the two parts, locals still differentiate however and North Sunderland still has its own identity but it is a friendly relationship between the two parts of the village.

North Sunderland is made up of twelve members who are elected normally for a period of four years and a clerk.

We have one working group covering the management of the cemetery.

The Council meet the first Monday of the month, unless it is a bank holiday and then we meet the following Monday, at 7pm in the Sheltered Housing Community Centre, Stone Close, Seahouses, to consider issues affecting our community.

This is a public meeting and all are welcome to attend.
