Wark Parish Council

Wark lies on a particularly beautiful stretch of the river North Tyne, twelve miles north of Hexham and fourteen south of Kielder Water.  It is well served by local transport with local buses running through to Hexham connecting with the Hadrian’s Wall AD 122 service.

At the centre is a picture-postcard village green, dominated by a magnificent chestnut tree planted in 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Jubilee. The Town Hall is a popular venue frequently hosting events including Friday coffee mornings serving tea, coffee and homemade cakes from 10am to noon.

The Black Bull Inn and Battlesteads Hotel provide good accommodation, food and drink whilst the Grey Bull remains a traditional pub. 

The Shop and Post Office is open all day for your daily requirements and Wark Butchers supplies high quality, locally sourced meats and many types of own recipe sausages and other groceries including wine.

Across the river the Sports Club provides a variety of sports facilities and children’s play area to keep young and old amused and entertained.

The Pennine Way and Pennine Cycle track pass close by and a number of footpaths enable the visitor to explore the beautiful countryside and river. Walk leaflets are available free from the Shop.

To the West of Wark is the village of Stonehaugh, with the Warksburn picnic area, Toilet, Totem Poles, Star Gazing Shelter and forest trails where it is possible see wild life such as roe-deer and red squirrels Walk leaflets can be found at the Stonehaugh Community Hall which hosts Stonehaugh Social Club, with Bar, Pool, and Darts, A Full English Breakfast is available on Sundays.

Stonehaugh nestles in the Dark Sky Park and for those interested in Astronomy there are organised Star Gazing Events. The Pennine Way, and Cycleway 68 pass close by and   Bridleways and footpaths lead to The Sill.  

Wark Parish Council is elected every 4 years by local residents and is responsible for:

  ·       Reviewing and commenting on planning applications within the Parish.

·         Liaising with relevant authorities regarding infrastructure /policing/community issues to represent your views and get the best advantage for the local area

·         Engaging with all interested parties regarding current and future shape of life in the local area.
