Can you help?

Hello fellow Ovington residents

Exciting news: This week I received our trees from the Woodland Trust. We have also had a delivery of bark chippings from Northumberland County Council.

TREE PLANTING - Saturday 26th March 2022 at 10.00 a.m. outside Ovington Social Club

I am seeking volunteers for Tree Planting. This will be in muddy fields away from paths and roads and you will need to carry seedling trees to the sites. Please dress appropriately in old clothes. Please bring your own gloves, spade and secateurs or loppers in case the area you plant needs brambles / undergrowth clearing.

TREE MAINTENANCE - Saturday 26th March 2022 at Midday outside Ovington Social Club

Along Coal Lane and St Andrews Lane we need to weed around the trees planted, then apply a ‘doughnut’ of bark chippings as a mulch. Mulch helps to suppress weeds and hold in moisture to help the trees in drier weather. This is something families can get involved with. Young people could even bring their own mini wheelbarrows to move bark chippings.

If the weather is kind, feel free to bring a picnic to eat at the benches outside the club or use the seats along St Andrews Lane that have been installed for public use.

Appeal for help:

As I shall be involved in the planting in fields north of the village, could I please have a volunteer to ‘lead’ the tree maintenance work? If you are able to help please get back to me asap.

I look forward to seeing you all.

Many thanks

Anne Hudson

p.s. more information to those who have not been involved before: Woodland Trust provide a mix of smaller specie trees: Hawthorn, Dogwood, Silver Birch, Hazel, Rowan and Wild Cherry. We also have some trees left from the January planting. As before the ‘trees’ are actually short seedlings of only 2 yrs old i.e. 40-70 cm high. Although these are tiny, they establish more quickly and experience has shown that after 5-6 years they start to overtake pot grown trees. Planting small trees also makes it easier to carry over muddy fields away from public paths/roads.
